A new football academy aimed at nurturing, grooming and exposing young talent has been formed in Mulanje.

According to its founder Yamikani Mathanda, it has been named Yami Football Academy.

“My main target are children under the age of 12, but I also recruit those that are in the age range of 14 and 16.

“Currently, I have over 32 children whom I train at Nsuwadzi Estate Ground on daily basis from 1pm to 3pm.

“I decided to open an academy because children in Mulanje do not have a platform to showcase and develop their talents,” said Mathanda.

He said the children are encouraged to work hard at school and “I offer them school materials such as books, shoes and bags.

“I also buy them football equipment such as boots, but my major challenge as at now is funding. I have approached a number of potential well-wishers such as Mulli Brothers Group of Companies managing director Leston Mulli and they have asked me to submit a proposal, which I have done,” he said.

Mathanda also said he recently met Surestream Academy technical director Peter Mponda who offered him tips on the basics of running an academy.

“I learnt a lot from my chat with Peter. It was such a wonderful experience and I am hoping to get more inspiration from him in the quest to have a fully-fledged academy in future,” said the 26-year-old ambitious youngman.

Mathanda said those willing to help can get him on +265 888 452 284.
