The body of Under-20 national football team player Abel Mwakilama,  who died in Portugal last week after a short illness, will arrive in the country next week and not tomorrow as previously announced.

A statement from the deceased’s family signed by Robert Mzinza, said the plane which will carry the remains of the former Chitipa United player will leave for Africa next Wednesday.

“The Mwakilama and Mwagomba Families would like to inform the public that there will be some changes to the arrangements due to two new developments.

The late Mwakilama contracted cerebral malaria
while he was in the country

“There is only one aircraft that takes on board coffins carrying dead bodies, the rest only carry cremated dust and this aeroplane flies from Portugal to Africa only on Wednesdays.

“This aeroplane has specifications and requirements that the coroner has to meet for them to be able to carry the body of a dead person,” reads in part the statement.

The statement further states that the information is yet to be confirmed by either the player’s club or Portuguese FA.

“As we await the confirmation on the current programme or changes that will be there due to the reasons above, let’s continue praying for the bereaved families and [stated] that the soul of Abel should rest in peace,” concludes the statement.

As we went to press, there was also no statement from Football Association of Malawi (FAM) on the death of the Under-20 national team player who contracted cerebral malaria when he was in the country for Under-20 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) first leg against Swaziland. n
