New TV series coming soon

Perfect Shots, a new video production company, is working on a series called Suburban which is expected to hit the screens soon.

The series, which is set in the city of Blantyre, centres its attention on daily life in the city.

From the first episode that was screened on the pre-launch that was held at Dika Hotel in Chirimba, one sees a Malawian story being told.

However, despite others calling Suburbans a soap opera, it fits more as a drama series than a soapie.

This was manifested in the deficiency of the “in the meantime” concept which the directors and scriptwriters failed to embrace.

The other shortfall of the motion picture is that the story line was moving too fast for a soap opera.

Great soapies have an episode set in one day. The first episode could make three episodes of a soapie.

The scenes were long which killed the suspense that could be achieved by making the scenes shorter raising curiosity from their viewers.

However, they managed to use models and fashionable clothes which could win the adoration of their viewers.

Characters of a TV series are supposed to be good looking and well dressed and Suburbans successfully achieves that.

Looking at the resources that the movie company had one can applaud them for the effort they made to produce the series.

Speaking to On the Arts, producer of the series Tawanda Masara said they faced a number of challenges but said they overcame them to still realise their dream.

“We faced a lot of financial constraints and we are still calling on for sponsors because we are still shooting the remaining episodes,” said Masara.

He added that through the initiative they believe the youth will find employment.

“The problem is that Malawians are hostile to new artists so they are not willing to assist until they see that you have made it,” he said.
