The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has said it was caught off guard by Flames inspirational midfielder Robert Ng’ambi’s failure to come for Wednesday’s friendly match against Zimbabwe’s Warriors.

On Tuesday, FAM announced that Ng’ambi was in transit from Botswana where he had gone on a personal trip.

Come Wednesday, the South Africa-based midfielder was not in the squad that faced the Warriors despite FAM’s assurance.

FAM chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda said he did not know what to say on Ng’ambi while Chamangwana said it would appear Ng’ambi missed his connecting flight to Blantyre from Johannesburg.

Apart from Ng’ambi, the other foreign-based player who did not show up was Gabadinho Mhango who, according to FAM, had a stomach upset.

The Flames lost the match 1-4.
