Flames in-form player Robert Ng’ambi’s brace gave Platinum Stars a 2-1 win over BidVest Wits University to clinch MTN8 final berth in South Africa.

Ng’ambi walked home K290 000 (R 8 000) richer after being voted man-of-the match for the third time this season. He has so far scored four goals in seven matches.

He scored the first goal after receiving a pass from captain Vuyo Mere on the 58th minute, then delicately tapped into the net from the same provider on the 78th minute. The Nation monitored the match on SuperSport.

Wits introduced Robin Ngalande who made an instant impact late in the game. But Nga’mbi, playing as a false striker wide on the left, had a final say.

“It wasn’t an easy game but we came here with a game plan. We have a very good team, a good defence. It always feels good to get into the final,” Ng’ambi told SuperSport in a post-match interview.

Stars beat Wits 4-2 in the first leg of the semi-final before completing the win at Bidvest Stadium.

Stars meet Orlando Pirates who drew 1-1 with their archrivals Kaizer Chiefs and sneaked through 2-1 on goal aggregate over two legs.

Tigresses suspicious of pregnancy test

BONIFACE PHIRI

Presidential Netball Cup defending champions Tigresses say they are suspicious of the pregnancy test results slip which indicated that one of their players had failed the test.

Tigresses general secretary Hellene Mpinganjira said the results slip, which NAM gave them, did not have an official stamp, date, signature nor show the number of weeks of the pregnancy.

She further said Tigresses did not receive a protest letter as per tradition when such cases arise.

Mpinganjira also bemoaned the way Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) treated their player after the pregnancy test, describing it as unprofessional, something which will have a psychological effect on the rest of the team.

“Our player was simply dumped at Shoprite after the test and she had to find her own means to travel to our hotel which was far. This has psychologically affected our girls. Let me tell [everyone] that our player is not pregnant,” she said.

As a result of the failed test, NAM deducted four points from Tigresses wins against Mafco and Karonga Sisters.

This forced Tigresses players to invade the court just as Mafco and Karonga Sisters were about to play to identify the team to face Civonets in the semi-final.

Tigresses have since appealed against the decision and NAM was scheduled to meet Wednesday evening to decide on their fate.
