Ng’ambi gets man-of-match
Midfielder Robert Ng’ambi redeemed Malawian players’ pride in South Africa, netting the winner which steered Platinum Stars to the Nedbank Cup semi-final after beating Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 on Sunday.
Ng’ambi was the only Malawian out of five in the Premier Soccer League in top flight action over the weekend.
He did not disappoint with the 87th minute tap-in, which largely contributed to his being named man-of-the match at Loftus Stadium, Pretoria.
Teko Modise had given Sundowns the lead before Thuso Phala and Nga’mbi scored for Stars to join SuperSport United, United FC and Kaizer Chiefs in the last four.
SuperSport, minus Malawian striker Atusaye Nyondo who was reported ill, beat Chippa United 2-1 on Saturday.
Injured defender Limbikani Mzava also did not play when his Bloemfontein Celtic lost 1-0 to Chiefs on Saturday in the same cup. The Nation monitored the matches on SuperSport television Channel 5.
Other Malawians who ply their trade is South Africa are Harry Nyirenda (Black Leopards) and Robin Ngalande (BidVest Wits University).
