Ng’ambi: It is a pity

Platinum Stars’ Malawian international Robert Ng’ambi will know this week whether he has passed a fitness test from an ankle injury he picked recently.

Ng’ambi confirmed yesterday that he twisted his left ankle during training for last week’s South Africa Premiership match against SuperSport United which ended 1-1.

He eventually also missed another encounter with Maritzburg United on Sunday.

Stars, who are also MTN8 Cup and Telkom Cup kings, lost 3-1 on post-match penalties to Maritzburg United in the preliminary round of Nedbank Cup.

“I will undergo a test when we return to training this week and see if I will be declared fit. It is a pity that we are out of Nedbank as we wanted to write another piece of history and bag a treble of trophies.

“I do not think my absence was a factor. The team played well, but penalties are unpredictable,” Ng’ambi said.

But there was good news elsewhere in South Africa. After a four-month injury lay-off, defender Limbikani Mzava returned to action for Bloemfontein Celtic, playing until the 46th minute when he was substituted.

Mzava’s compatriot Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango was replaced in the 91st minute.

Celtic beat Witbank Spurs 2-1 to progress in Nedbank Cup where they joined BidVest Wits University in the quarter-finals. BidVest, who did not feature another Malawian Robin Ngalande, thrashed Amazulu 4-1 whereas Peter Wadabwa’s Golden Arrows lost by a similar margin to bow out of the cup.
