South Africa influential magazine Kick-Off has nominated Robert Ng’ambi for Player of the Season Award in recognition of his double cup winning exploits with Platinum Stars.

Ng’ambi, who is second leading Malawian scorer in the Premier Soccer League on seven goals, was nominated alongside Happy Jele (Orlando Pirates), Bernard Parker, Tefu Mashamaite, Willard Katsande (Kaizer Chiefs); Hlompho Kekana and Alje Schut (Mamelodi Sundowns) and Sibusiso Vilakazi (BidVest Wits University).

The attacking midfielder could also be a nominee for PSL’s awards. It will be the first time in the 21st century that a Malawian has received the Kick-Off award voted for by the continental magazine readers throughwww.kickoff.com and Kick-Off Mobile.

The magazine credits Ng’ambi for Stars’ Telkom Knockout and MTN8 cup triumphs.

“The 28-year-old has netted 11 goals in all competitions — three shy of the club record, jointly held by ex-Stars men Hareaipha Marumo and Bradley Grobler. Three of Ng’ambi’s strikes came in the TKO, while he also netted in Dikwena’s journey to MTN8 glory. In the Premiership, he has struck seven times in 27 outings, with one match remaining against Ajax Cape Town on Saturday,” wrote the magazine in justifying Ng’ambi’s nomination.

“The ex-Black Leopards ace, who also bagged an impressive eight goals last term, is a menace with his late runs into the area, and it is unsurprising the league’s big spenders are thought to be after his signature.”

The South African season ends this coming weekend with Sundowns already crowned PSL champions whereas Peter Wadabwa’s Golden Arrows have been relegated. On the other hand, Free State Stars of coach Kinnah Phiri and striker Esau Kanyenda’s Polokwane City drew 1-1 and 0-0 against Pirates and Moroka Swallows respectivelyon Wednesday night to have hope of surviving the drop.

Stars are second from bottom of the 16-member league with City placed 14th. Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango and Limbikani Mzava featured for Bloemfontein Celtic who climbed to fifth after defeating Ajax Cape Town 2-1.
