Flames inspirational midfielder Robert ‘Baggio’ Ng’ambi stood up to be counted when he scored Platinum Stars’ first league goal this season to beat Moroka Swallows 3-1 on Sunday.

Ng’ambi, who swung upfield to beautifully plant home Joseph Malongoane’s well curled corner kick, said he was more excited with the significance of his strike..

“Obviously I was very happy to score my team’s first league goal this season and hopefully it will inspire me to have a great season,” said Ng’ambi from South Africa.

The other goals for Stars came from Siphelele Mthembu and Benson Mhlongo. Ng’ambi was the architect of the second goal when he broke down the leftflank and his cross was perfect for Mthembu to side-foot home.

Apparently Ng’ambi was one of the only two Malawian players who featured in the PSL’s opening games at the weekend. The other was Harry Nyirenda who played a full game for Black Leopards when they beat Limbikani Mzava’s Bloemfontein Celtic 3-2.

Mzava is yet to be cleared by Football Association of Malawi (FAM) because Celtic are yet to pay Escom United the transfer-fee balance.

Flames striking duo of Atusaye Nyondo and Robin Ngalande were not featured by SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits respectively.

SuperSport drew 1-1 with Ajax Cape Town whereas Wits went down 2-0 to Free State Stars.
