After sponsoring football and netball bonanzas in four areas of Balaka North Constituency, business magnate Tony Ngalande has said he will now sponsor leagues that will start next week to the tune of K1.5 million (about $8 982).
Ngalande announced the good news at Kachenga Ground when he presented prizes to the winners of football and netball bonanzas in the area.
The businessperson dismissed suggestions that he is sponsoring the tournaments in order to advance political ambitions.
“This has nothing to do with politics as others may view it. It is all about developing sports in my home area.
“I am also sponsoring the tournaments to keep the youth away from engaging in immoral behaviour,” said Ngalande.
He announced that the football and netball leagues in Kachenga and Ulongwe areas will be sponsored to the tune of K450 000 (about $2 694) each.
“Then, I will also launch similar leagues in Matola and Khwisa areas amounting to K300 000 (about $1 796) each and it is all coming up to K1.5 million (about $8 982),” he said.
Ngalande said the leagues will run for three months. He also pledged to fund refereeing and coaching clinics in all the four areas.
The finals of the bonanzas in Kachenga and Ulongwe were played at the weekend and they were sponsored to the tune of K140 000 each.
“Next week, we are going to have the finals of the bonanza in Khwisa area,” he said amid applause from the huge turnout.
The businessperson has also pledged to embark on other development projects like constructing bridges and providing tap water.
He also pledged to distribute exercise books to students in all the primary schools in the area.
In the Ngalande football bonanza finals played at Kachenga, Banoni emerged the winners after beating Iwisa 1-0. Gilson Kahinduka scored the lone goal of the match while in a third-place match, Project beat Chileka by the same margin.
And in netball, Kachenga emerged winners after beating Nambira 16-8.
In their remarks, Group Village Headman Kachenga and coordinator of the tournaments Charles Nyirenda thanked Ngalande for coming up to sponsor the tournaments.
Said the chief: “Our youths in this area now have something to do, the tournaments will keep them away from indulging in promiscuous behaviour. We are also very grateful for the development projects that you have embarked on.”
