Private soldier Alick Ng’ambi worked his way through to become champion in the 2012 Malawi Defence Force (MDF) shooting competition which was held at Cobbe Barracks in Zomba on Friday.

Ng’ambi was eventually promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal and given K10 000 (about $29) for his feat. He amassed 650 points. The event started with a 63-kilometre walking exercise the previous day.

Speaking after the event, commanding officer of the First Battalion of MDF lieutenant colonel Richard Chagonapanja said the event was as a result of the training directives carried out in all MDF units across the country.

Said Chagonapanja: “MDF wants them as professional soldiers to be physically fit all the time; hence, the long walking distance which took them the whole night.”

Lieutenant Dickson Mwasevuma was the best platoon commander whereas sergeant Godwin Mhango emerged best senior non-commissioned officer.

Best junior non-commissioned officer was lance corporal Ted Matemba and private Zione Chimbiri was the best female soldier. Each of the winners in their categories got away with K10 000 (about $29) cash.

About 120 soldiers took part in the competition which had 12 MDF officers. They were from the administrative unit as well as support battalion unit.
