Ng’ambi, Gaba shine in CAF tourney preliminaries

Local teams might be conspicuously missing from the continental CAF tournaments, but some Malawian players are shining for their foreign clubs.

Midfielder Robert Ng’ambi and striker Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango stood up to be counted when they scored for their South African clubs as the CAF Confederations Cup preliminaries rolled into life at the weekend.

Scored the priceless goal for Stars: Ng’ambi

Ng’ambi’s lone goal saw his team Platinum Stars registering  a win over Mozambican side Uniao Do Songo in the first leg of the preliminary round whereas Gabadinho struck a vital away goal for Bidvest Wits when they went down 2-1 to Reunion’s Saint-Louisienne.

Ng’ambi stepped off the bench in the 46th minute to score the priceless goal for Dikwena in the 63rd minute according to Kickoff.com.

“This goal gives us a slight advantage going into the return leg and I was happy to have made the difference,” said Ng’ambi in an interview with The Nation from South Africa yesterday.

Uniao Do Songo also has Malawian players Charles Swini and Frank Banda.

The second leg is set to be played next weekend, the date and time  are yet to be communicated.

In Reunion, Wits surged ahead in the 37th minute through  Gabadinho, but were undone in the second half as the hosts came from behind to win the match.

Wits conceded a late penalty to allow the hosts snatch a winner. However, Gabadinho’s goal gives them a great chance of turning the tie around in the return leg next weekend.
