NGO creates forum for women

Governance, Gender Justice and Development Centre (GGJDC), in conjunction with Lilongwe district gender office, has established a women’s forum to enable women to speak out on issues affecting them in the district.

Speaking last week after establishing the forum, GGJDC communications and resource mobilisation officer Anthony Dumba said the grouping will be representing women’s interests at village development committee (VDC), area development committee (ADC) and council meetings.

He said: “Issues affecting women are not adequately tackled by duty-bearers because women are not well-represented at various meetings.

“The forum aims at ensuring that women’s voices are heard at VDC, ADC and council levels.”

Lilongwe district gender officer Gertrude Simwaka commended GGJDC for facilitating the formation of the forum, saying it will empower women.

“I am pleased with the development. I thank GGJDC for the support. Lilongwe Rural had no women forum to make the voice of women in rural areas heard, but now with the forum, women’s rights will be respected,” she said.

GGJDC is implementing  a Women Empowered for Leadership project with funding from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs through Hivos.

The project seeks to empower more women to access political and public positions.
