NGO for sustainable energy

International Committee for the Development of People (Cisp) country representative Michelle Stella has said the use of alternative clean, secure and environmentally sustainable energy is key to averting negative impacts of climate change.

Stella, whose organisation is rehabilitating a 150 hectare Chilingali Irrigation Scheme in Nkhotakota, said this at Katengeza Village in the district on Tuesday where they have equipped communities with skills to make briquettes from locally available materials to use for cooking in place of wood.

The initiative is meant to conserve Lake Chilingali buffer zone, the scheme’s main source of water.

“We are rehabilitating a scheme here in Chilingali. As such, taking care of the water source that feeds the scheme is important. People cut down trees for fuel and we are giving them these skills to lessen the pressure on trees,” he said.

Katengeza Community Based Organisation  chairperson Muhammad Umande said deforestation around the catchment area is rampant but slowly things are improving, especially with such nature conservation programmes.

He said briquettes are an affordable and clean source of energy.

The project is funded by the European Union.n
