Creative Solutions for the Environment has handed over a girls’ hostel to Christian Liebig Community Day Secondary (CDSS) in Mdeka, Blantyre District.

Speaking on Saturday during the handover, the organisation’s executive director Taona Chigwenembe said they constructed the facility to accommodate girls on campus.

“Some girls drop out of school due to long distances. However, self-boarding exposes girls to sexual abuse,” she said.

Chigwenembe said the hostel can accommodate 20 girls.

The school’s head teacher Elita Zamula said the school only accommodates 72 out of 167 girls.

“Most girls do self-boarding and lack adult supervision, which puts them at risk of exploitation and gender-based violence,” she said.

A student Linda Rafaelo said the hostel will help them save money on accommodation.

The organisation also constructed a girls’ hostel at Utale CDSS in Balaka District.

With funding from New Community Project, Creative Solutions for the Environment is implementing A Girl and a Bike Project providing scholarships to over 80 underprivileged girls in Balaka and Neno districts.
