NGO targets vulnerable Dzaleka Camp communities

About 250 people from Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa and surrounding communities stand to benefit from financial aid that Churches Action for Relief and Development (Card) will disburse. 

Card advocacy coordinator Mavuto Simbi said the project, Graduation Approach, will run for 18 months.

He said the non-governmental organisation (NGO) has earmarked K250 million for vulnerable people from the camp and surrounding communities of Msakambewa and Mkukula.

“We will give them financial assistance after attending capacity building sessions that we have organised. We will provide capital in the production of broilers, layers and piggery.

“We will also provide seed and fertiliser to farmers,” said Simbi.

He also said the project is a graduation approach that seeks to complement government and other supporting partners improve vulnerable people’s livelihood.

Speaking in a separate interview, Dowa district commissioner Alex Mdooko commended Card for the project.

“I would like to urge NGOs contemplating of embarking on various interventions in the camp not to sideline the host communities,” he said.

The project is being supported with funding from United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
