United Purpose (UP) has trained 900 local leaders from traditional authorities (T/As) Nkalo and Maoni in Chiradzulu on Covid-19 preventive measures.

Chiradzulu UP district coordinator Chimwemwe Lungu said the non-governmental organisation (NGO) conducted the training to complement government’s efforts in reaching out to local leaders on Covid-19 preparedness and response.

“We were advised by the council through the office of district environmental health office to engage local leaders on Covid-19 messages as they are the focal persons in their local communities,” she said.

A participant, Wyson Idi from Phwere Village in T/A Nkalo, said they have learnt how the  disease is transmitted and how to prevent its further spread.

Another participant, Mary Makwala from T/A Maoni, who is also a member of village savings and loans group, said as a leader, she needed information to support her group as they were still conducting group activities despite the threat posed by the pandemic.

The organisation also donated 24 buckets as advised by the council to be distributed to schools, churches, mosques and community gathering places which were not reached by organisations.
