Umodzi Foundations and Sponsor a Child Campaign have launched a Monica Banda cervical cancer treatment drive to ensure that well-wishers finance her trip to Ocean Road Institute in Tanzania for medical treatment.

The two organisations said this on Saturday after visiting Monica in Bangwe, Blantyre to understand the kind of support she needs for her medication since she was diagnosed with the disease in January this year.

Director of Umodzi Foundation, Samuel Magombo, said the campaign seeks to raise K1.5 million (about $3 571) for her trip.

“We have given ourselves five days effective April 29 to raise the said amount because her life is in danger. People and institutions should assist because any delays will worsen her condition,” said Magombo.

According to him, they decided to partner Sponsor a Child Campaign after observing that their organisation has almost a similar project of assisting the afflicted such as Monica.

“Let’s assist her because we are talking about a future leader here who can no longer go to school, walk and do households chores because she is in pain,” he said.

Since Monica was diagnosed with cervical cancer, she has had no opportunity to travel because of financial constraints.
