As the countdown to the May 20 Tripartite Elections continues, the National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has donated 2 690 solar radio sets to different vulnerable groups for easy access of electoral messages.

The target groups include prisoners, people with disabilities and poor communities.

Speaking when he presented the sets recently, Nice executive director Ollen Mwalubunju said the trust wants to reach many potential voters.

“Nice, being aware of the role radio in the electoral processes has adopted radio distribution strategy to reach broad groups of potential voters. The radios being distributed do not require batteries or electricity for charging.

“They are solar power generating radio which means anyone can use it without challenges. Nice is distributing radios to prisons, for instance, knowing the fact that it is very difficult to get electoral-related information to inmates since campaign is not allowed in the cells.”

One of the recipients, Charles Banda of the Association of the Physically Disabled of Malawi, thanked Nice for the donation, saying it gives a chance to vulnerable groups to access electoral messages.
