With less than two weeks to the tripartite elections on May 20, the National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has intensified voter civic education to counter voter apathy.

Speaking at a media briefing held in Lilongwe, Nice executive director Ollen Mwalubunju said they want to encourage Malawians to go in large numbers and exercise their right to vote.

“People from all walks of life are being encouraged to go and vote for leaders of their choice. In the same vein, we have stepped up our efforts to educate many people, especially the vulnerable groups, in relation to the mapping out exercise we carried out recently,” said Mwalubunju.

He said among the places they are targeting are those that had low voter turnout as well as high number of null and void votes during the 2009 polls.

“Nice volunteers are conducting door-to-door voter civic education in places like Mulanje, Phalombe, Blantyre Rural and Mchinji, among others,” explained Mwalubunju.
