Nice pledges to continue civic empowerment
National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has assured Malawians that it will remain an actor in civic empowerment.
The organisation made the assurance last week in Mangochi during the distribution of 10 bicycles to its civic education volunteers.
With funding from the European Union, the district’s Nice office has distributed 78 bicycles worth K3.9 million to its volunteers since the inception of a nationwide Programme Estimate Number Three (PE 3).
The bicycles will ease volunteers’ mobility to reach out people in rural communities with messages that would empower them to demand quality and sustainable services from service providers.
Speaking after distributing the bicycles, Mangochi Nice district advisory forum chairperson Elliot Kumwanje said the gesture is a signal of Nice commitment towards civic empowerment.
He said: “We have a litany of work to do in this district. We have learnt that many people are still not aware of their rights as enshrined in the Republican Constitution; hence, we want to go flat out with civic empowerment messages through the volunteers.”
Mangochi Nice civic education officer Turner Banda advised the volunteers to use the bicycles for the intended purpose.
One of the volunteers, Esmie Kalimu, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying apart from motivating them to work hard, the bicycles will ease mobility challenges they have been facing.
However, she asked Nice Trust to consider providing attires such as T-shirts for them to be easily identified by people in the communities. n
