National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has called on female aspirants to strategise for the 2019 Tripartite Elections.

Nice Ntcheu district civic education officer Alinafe Chikakuda made the appeal during a district executive committee (DEC) meeting.

She said it is sad that women, who are a majority in the country, should have a small representation in Parliament and at local government level.

Chikakuda (R) explaining a point

“Some problems in our communities are identified by women and they can be addressed better by them. However, if we have little or no representation as women, we cannot develop,” Chikakuda said.

She pledged to assist any female aspirant under the 50:50 Campaign programme, saying her office is using all communication channels to mobilise communities for successful and peaceful elections.

In a separate interview, Ntcheu district commissioner Smart Gwedemula urged political parties to consider fielding female candidates in one or two constituencies and wards in the district.

Meanwhile, women rights activists have started mobilising female aspirants to join hands and campaign for each other.

Ntcheu has seven constituencies and 14 wards which are all represented by men.
