The National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust on Sunday urged aspiring candidates in Mulanje North Constituency to preach peace during campaign as one way of preventing violence.

Mulanje Nice district officer Twambilire Mwabungulu said this on Sunday during a debate in the area of group village head Kamwendo in Traditional Authority Mkanda in the district.

He said voters need to have a clear understanding of their candidates’ manifestos.

“Voters lack time to hear what aspirants propose in terms of social and economic development projects; hence, the meeting. We believe that the gathering today has given them a glimpse of what they want to provide the masses,” he said.

Group Village Head Kamwendo advised aspirants to make promises that they would fulfil once voted into power.

“People have heard what you want to do and if you decide to do the opposite, the same people will vote you out in the next polls. People in Mulanje North are tired of lies,” said Kamwendo.

He urged aspirants who will win to ensure that they stay in the area to understand the people’s needs.

“Some abandon the area once voted into power, but that is not viable because how do you know the challenges,” said Kamwendo.

The debate was aimed at giving voters an opportunity to interact with candidates ahead of the May 20 Tripartite Elections.
