Nice urges Mangochi citizens to demand development

National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) has urged communities in Koche Ward in Mangochi Central Constituency to hold their duty-bearers accountable if their area is to develop.

Mangochi Nice district civic education officer Turner Banda said this on Tuesday during the supervision of Koche Citizen Forum, a community group that speaks on behalf of people on crucial issues in Traditional Authority Mponda (T/A)in the district.

The advice followed constituents’ concerns that the area faces acute shortage of school blocks, teachers’ houses, potable water and health facilities, among other essential services.

“Development cannot take place in the communities if people remain voiceless on crucial issues that can transform their areas. People need to wake up and demand development needs from duty-bearers,” he said.

Banda said his organisation, with financial support from European Union (EU), will continue to call for community empowerment because it wants to see a country where people take to task duty-bearers and service providers on critical issues.

However, he encouraged citizen forums in the district to be active in following up development activities in their areas.

Group village head (GVH) Matuwi said the area has lagged behind in development and hoped that citizen forums will be of a great value as citizens will demand development from relevant authorities. n
