Contractors of the Mzuzu-Nkhata Bay Road on Saturday donated an ambulance to Nkhata Bay District Hospital.

However, district health officer (DHO) Mwatikonda Mbendera said the donation brings the number of reliable vehicles to two.

He said the district requires seven ambulances, and boats to ferry patients from areas where vehicles cannot reach.

Said Mbendera: “This ambulance will improve our service delivery.

“We appeal to stakeholders to help the hospital with more of such resources.”

On his part, Strabag commercial manager Sven Krueger said they noticed that the hospital has many ambulances which are not working.

“This is what we do worldwide. After a project, we make donations and make friends with the community,” he said.

The Health Sector Strategic Plan II (HSSP II 2017-2022) acknowledges that in Malawi, emergency medical services and referral services are weak and not well streamlined.

“Almost all DHOs and central hospitals face critical shortages of standardised ambulances for emergency referrals,” reads the plan in part. n
