Lack of political will has been singled out as the major factor in the continued failure in promotion and implementation of disability-friendly programmes in Nkhata Bay.

Mankhambira Disability Forum chairperson Payikani Kondowe said in his area of Sanga no member of Parliament (MP) or ward councillor has visited them to address disability issues.

Citing failure to consider inclusion of disability-friendly infrastructure in construction projects in the district, he said something has to be done soon.

Kondowe has also said lack of inclusion of persons with disability in development programmes is a drawback in development efforts.

“We are not being taken on board and we are worried that our problems will not be addressed any time soon,” said Kondowe.

In her remarks, ward councillor Beauty Banda acknowledged the concern and promised to look into the issues.

“It is true that I have not met them since I took office two years ago, but I want to assure them that time has come and these issues will be handled amicably,” said Banda.
