Nkhotakota Central Member of Parliament Edwin Banda (Malawi Congress Party [MCP]) has expressed interest to contest in the 2014 presidential race.

Banda said being a citizen of Malawi and a lawyer by training, he aspires to be president of Malawi in 2014 and that nobody should block him from achieving his ambition.

“How to effect that [ambition] is another issue, but it is my right to aspire for the presidency and I will be happy to effect it in order to cherish my desire,” he said.

Banda said he qualifies to be a president and currently has about K2 million (about $8 000) to launch his campaign.

“I have not currently started campaign, but once I start, I will shake the ground. Whether I will compete during the Malawi Congress Party convention depends on circumstances and what happens between now and 2014,” he said.

Banda became MP in 2009.
