Nkhotakota District Council has suspended operations of the Ntchisi Organisation for Youth Development (Noyd).

A suspension letter dated July 17 2017, signed by Nkhotakota district commissioner (DC) Felix Mkandawire addressed to Plan Malawi country director, accuses Noyd of lacking transparency and accountability in the way it utilised project funds in the district.

Noyd is implementing projects in traditional authorities Mwansambo and Malengachanzi in the district.

“They are merely interested in the spending of the budget but not quality. They do not share the budget with the council and also failed to report to the district council,” reads the letter in part.

It further accuses Noyd of failing to abide by the technical advice and policy direction from the district social welfare office.

In response, Noyd project officer Gracian Stambuli said Nkhotakota district social welfare officer Derrick Mwenda was behind the suspension.

He alleged that Mwenda has been demanding adjustment of meal allowances which they have repeatedly denied.

Mwenda, however, laughed off the accusations, saying his office has never demanded adjustment in meal allowances.

“If we wanted to ask for that, we would have formally written Plan Malawi to consider the matter. The reasons contained in the letter are genuine,” said Mwenda.
