Nkhulande on Sunday emerged champions of the 2015 Northern Zone Basketball League (Nozobal) Championship after beating Moyale Barracks 61-43 at Katoto Secondary School court in Mzuzu.

Patrick Chirwa and Nelson Kanyenda inspired Nkhulande to win the title. No wonder Chirwa earned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) accolade.

The event sponsored by G.Y. Imports and Export to the tune of K800 000, saw the champions carting home K300 000 in what was a winner-takes-all showcase while Chirwa got K50 000 for his feat.

Nozobal vice-chairperson Aaron Manda expressed satisfaction with the level of competition displayed by the teams.

“I salute the winners. Nkhulande, let me also thank our sponsors G.Y. Imports and Exports for coming to our rescue. When we were crying out in the wilderness for years, little did we know that the angel of mercy was on the way,” he said.

Nkhulande captain Kanyenda said: “It feels good to be Nozobal champions today. The title is more important to us as we have now qualified for national championship slated for December,” he said.

G.Y. Imports and Export managing director Griffin Kalua pledged to continue sponsoring the competition.

“We are satisfied with the way the league has been run and the level of commitment and competition has been encouraging. Let me assure you that we will continue to sponsor the league,” said Kalua. n
