Members of the Malawi Forum for  Unity and National Development (Mafunde) yesterday gave George Nnesa a fresh mandate to lead them during a convention that took place in Blantyre. Nnesa went unopposed.

Positions that were not competed for included those of the deputy national chairperson, which went to Dina Kanyerere, the vice-presidency went to Austin Ntambalika and deputy legal adviser Hastings Mumba.

However, the position of secretary general was hotly contested for by four people, including the incumbent Levison Ganiza, who was challenged by Jane Rose Anthony, Peter Lubani and Zofuna Yolamu. The results were not yet known as we went to press.

The position of national chairperson of the party was being contested by incumbent Ben Kautsire, whose challengers was Billy Mgala.

According to the statement, the position of treasurer general was also contested by Patrick Mbewe, Fraizer Mbewe and Mgala.

During a press conference the party held recently, Mafunde announced that delegates would mandate the leadership on the way forward on electoral alliances ahead of the May 20 polls.
