No chance for local coaches—FAM

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has said it has resolved to hire an expatriate coach for the Flames because currently, there is no suitable local coach.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said the resolution was made during the association’s executive committee meeting held in Mzuzu on Saturday.

He said: “The technical sub-committee met on Friday and looked at the long-term plan and felt it was necessary to engage an expatriate if Malawi is to make transformational changes.

“It was agreed that some of the expatriate coaches that have applied are looking for affordable salaries and it was felt that we could not afford to lose such an opportunity of hiring an expatriate and the executive endorsed the proposal. We feel local coaches have been given a chance and at present, there is no one who is suitable.”

The FAM president said they will now be writing government through the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) on their plans.

“Our plan is that we should have a coach by January [2017] because we are participating in the Chan [Championship of African Nations] Tournament which kicks off in April.”

He also said four or five coaches will be short-listed for interviews.

The development means local coaches such as Yasin Osman, Lawrence Waya, Eddingtone Ng’onamo, Patrick Mabedi and Gilbert Chirwa who had shown interest to vie for the vacant Flames job, will not be considered.

Waya told The Nation in July this year that he felt he is the solution to the Flames woes, saying: “I have been looking forward to coaching Malawi. Given a chance, I will accept it wholeheartedly. I am ready for the responsibility, it is long overdue.”

On his part, Osman argued that he has never been given a chance to take charge of the Flames on permanent basis.

“I have always come in on fire-fighting situations. So, to judge me based on that would be very unfair,” he said.
