Northern Region Amateur Boxing Committee says it has no money to hold a tournament to select boxers to represent Malawi at 2016 Olympic Games qualifiers in Angola next month.

“We were supposed to have the regional qualifiers last week, but the games were postponed,” the region’s chairperson Stewart Moyo said.

He said they need funds for food, accommodation and transport for boxers from as far as Karonga, Chitipa and Nkhata Bay.

Malawi Amateur Boxing Association (Maba) blamed the regional body for failing to mobilise funds.

Maba vice-president Pyson Likagwa

said the national body deliberately informed the regions some time back so that they should find sponsors.

“We elect people at the regional level whose part of their jobs is to mobilise funds for regional competitions. We expect them to do what their counterparts have done in the South and Central regions. Otherwise, we don’t have money to fund regional activities at the moment,” said Likwangwa.

Boxers that will image tops at regional level are expected to participate in a national tournament to select the final squad.
