Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has not fielded any candidate in all eight wards of Luchenza Municipality.

This was disclosed at the end of the just ended presentation of nomination papers.

According to constituency returning officer Gertrude Ndunya, only Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), People’s Party (PP), United Democratic Front (UDF) and New Labour Party (NLP) have submitted nomination papers for their candidates to contest as ward councillors.

Ndunya said DPP has representatives in all eight wards, PP has seven candidates while UDF has five candidates. NLP, said Ndunya, will only field a single candidate.

“Apart from those representing political parties mentioned there are also five independent candidates who have submitted their nomination papers to contest as ward councillors,” she said.

In a telephone interview, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said that she is not aware of the development and asked for more time to consult the director of elections in the party.

Luchenza Municipal Council has eight wards which are part of Thyolo East and Mulanje South West constituencies.
