After guiding Silver Strikers to back-to-back TNM Super League championship glory, the club’s chairperson Dr. McDonald Mafuta-Mwale has declared that he will not seek re-election.

Silver’s executive committee tenure of office has expired and the club’s general secretary Owen Munthali announced that they will have an elective annual general meeting (AGM) before the start of next season.

Mafuta-Mwale said in an interview on Monday that he felt he has done his part and it is time to bow out of the bankers..

“Discussions with various stakeholders such as the board of trustees and the sponsors [Reserve Bank of Malawi] are still going on, but my personal position is that I will not seek re-election at the forthcoming elections.

Asked if he feels there are others who can take over the hot seat, Mafuta-Mwale said: “I am sure we’ll be able to get capable people to run the club.”

Mafuta-Mwale also said he is proud to have built a strong side that was able to win the flagship league back-to-back.

“When I look back I feel proud of the team’s achievements over the past couple of years. We soldiered on and the team spirit was wonderful.

“We built a solid side and although we struggled in cup competitions, we did quite well in the league and tried our best in setting up the structures in the quest to turn the club into a commercial entity by going into merchandise partnership with Nsenjjere,” he said.

However, Mafuta-Mwale admitted that failure to realise his dream to take part in the CAF Champions League coupled with allegations of match-fixing were some of the challenges his leadership faced.

Meanwhile, Daudi Mtanthiko, who is Mafuta-Mwale’s deputy, has been elected treasurer of the Southern Region Football Committee (SRFC).
