Nobody too poor to serve—Ziyaye

Archbishop Tarcisius Ziyaye of the Blantyre Catholic Archdiocese has challenged youths in the country to serve their communities, noting that nobody is too poor to make a contribution.

Ziyaye said this when he laid a foundation stone in Blantyre on Saturday at a site for a 1.4 million euros (about K614 million) centre for St Egidio, a community within the church.

“Nobody is too poor to give or serve. Therefore, youth groups must not only grow in numbers, but in quality too,” he said.

Ziyaye then challenged the youth community in the Catholic Church to show the charisma and spirit of St Egidio which, he said, manifests itself in tireless service.

St Egidio country director Elard Allumando said the 5 000-plus community has been in the country for over 10 years and it has always needed a place to call a permanent home. The site is situated near Blantyre Bus Stands.

He said the centre will house offices and host activities. The funding for the building is from well-wishers in Italy.
