Failure to offer worthwhile contracts has seen Mighty Wanderers FC losing more players to Mozambican teams on free transfers.

The latest to leave the Nomads camp for Mozambique’s Desportivo de Nacala as a free agent is midfielder-cum-defender Idrissa Walesi.

Walesi, who played for Wanderers for over four seasons, confirmed his move which FAM transfer matching system manager (TMS) Casper Jangale sanctioned.

Jangale noted that, as is usually the case with most local clubs, Wanderers could not produce a contract: “Hence, we cleared him as a free agent last week.”

Walesi joins other Wanderers players such as Foster Namwela, Joseph Kamwendo and Alfred Manyozo in leaving as free agents.

During a club Licensing System workshop at Chiwembe Technical Centre, a fortnight ago, former Wanderers general secretary David Kanyenda complained about the loss of players for free. He said the list also included Gerald Phiri Junior, Innocent Jere and Gerald Chimbaka. However, Jere and Chimbaka are reportedly back from Mozambique.

Last month, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) also cleared as a free agent Chimango Kayira from Big Bullets to Costal do Sol. Bullets and Kayira’s original club, Kabula United, (formerly Escom United), threatened to seek legal redress, but Jangale said the player got cleared as his supposed contract had expired.

FAM has since asked clubs to acquire club and player licences before the season starts on April 19.
