Nomads react to ‘juju’ allegations
Mighty Wanderers FC have distanced themselves from revelations about a K26 000 balance settlement with a witch doctor.
This follows news that some section of the team’s set up felt the witch doctor might have cast a spell leading to the recent poor showing.
The club’s general secretary Mike Butao was reacting to a clarification made by the supporters committee secretary Paul Mphepo on Monday that the team owed the witchdoctor K26 000 and not K50 000 as it was claimed.
Speaking in the presence of Mphepo when they visited The Nation offices yesterday, Butao claimed that the executive committee does not have an idea at all that the K26 000 was paid to the said witchdoctor.
“We are, therefore, at pains to know where the money came from because the supporters do not have any savings and all their financial needs are met by the executive committee. In fact, there was no request related to such transaction and even if it were, it could not have been entertained,” saidButao.
He said in Gerald Phiri, Charles Manda and Kannock Munde, the Nomads have high profile coaches on the local scene and they would have no reason to believe in juju.
“To the contrary, we believe in the coaches imparting technical expertise in the players. We also believe in divine intervention and prayer is part of our culture at Wanderers.
“We have a youthful squad at Wanderers and it would not be fair to subject them to juju and if that was true, then they would have left the team,” said Butao.
The Nomads spokesperson said the confirmation and reports of juju could have come due to communication breakdown within the Nomads’ supporters’ setup.
Reports reaching The Nation indicate that the supporters committee secretary was confronted by his fellow committee members and fans for speaking out on the issue of juju during an emergency meeting held at Wanderers Club on Tuesday.
The meeting also agreed to give the coaching panel a chance to continue with the drive of transforming the team. The Nomads now anchor the TNM Super League table with a single point from eight games.
Currently, there are fears that the team could be relegated to the second-tier Southern Region Football League (SRFL) if the trend continues.
