Nomads stuck with ex sponsor’s name

Financially struggling TNM Super League outfit Mighty Be Forward Wanderers cannot drop their past sponsor Be Forward Limited’s name because the club did not alert authorities, it has emerged.

The Nomads want to revert totheir traditional name—Mighty Wanderers—after parting ways with the Japanese reconditioned motor vehicle dealers on December 31 2020.

Wanderers are still using Be Forward branded attire

But Super League of the Malawi (Sulom) and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) said the Nomads cannot change the name mid-season because they never communicated to the authorities on the move before kick-off.

Sulom general secretary Williams Banda yesterday said the Nomads have not made any move.

He said: “Are they changing their name? What are the reasons and who is championing the cause?

“We have no official communication. Change of name has its procedure and they [Wanderers] have not initiated that.”

FAM club licensing and compliance manager Casper Jangale also said the Nomads have not initiated the process.

“And it is not an overnight exercise which means they could maintain it for a while,” he said.

Wanderers chairperson Symon Sikwese said they were working on some logistics.

The delay means Be Forward Limited will continue to enjoy their brand being advertised through the Nomads.

The Nomads parted ways with Be Forward Limited in December last year, ending a five-year romance.

The Nomads are stuck with K100 million debt following the loss of sponsorship.

Sikwese said the team risks closing shop if the club fails to settle the debt.
