Nomads supporters chair suspended

Disagreements have rocked the Be Forward camp where the main supporters committee has suspended its chairperson Yamikani Kaliyapa.

According to a letter signed by almost all the committee members, Kaliyapa is accused of misappropriating the committee’s funds.

The committee’s publicity secretary Herbert Mulaka confirmed the suspension yesterday.

Mulaka said Kaliyapa failed to account for K170 000 meant for some of the members travel to Lilongwe for the second leg of the Luso TV Bus Ipite Bonanza.

“The executive [committee] gave him K170 000 meant for our transportation to Lilongwe but the money did not reach us.

Kaliyapa: That is rubbish

“He is also failing to account for proceeds from supporters IDs and he is also allegedly involved in the sale of fraudulent tickets at the Kamuzu Stadium. There are a lot of stories against him. So, when we sat down it was resolved to suspend him pending investigations,” said Mulaka.

But Kaliyapa rubbished the accusations saying they are just ‘propaganda stories’ meant to tarnish his leadership.

“I have received the letter, its rubbish. They have no such powers to fire or suspend me. It is only the executive committee which has such powers,” he said.

Commenting on the allegation levelled against him, Kaliyapa said: “These are just cooked-up stories, I know nothing about it. Mind you, it was a majority of supporters who elected me to this position not just the 12 supporters committee who signed the letter.

“Tell them that Kaliyapa is not stepping down, I am the chairperson. If they want to suspend me, then the letter should come from the executive,” he added.

But Mulaka insisted that Kaliyapa is on suspension.

“Mind you we called Kaliyapa on Sunday, we talked to him and he acknowledged. So, write what I am telling you that we have suspended him,” he added.

Nomads general secretary Mike Butao refused to comment, saying the issue is yet to be discussed by the executive committee. n
