Mighty Wanderers FC vice-chairperson Gift Mkandawire is vying for Malawi’s flagship football league, Sulom’s vice-presidency.

Mkandawire’s move follows the Super League of Malawi’s (Sulom) announcement at the weekend that among other things, it will appoint a vice-president at its annual general assembly scheduled for this Sunday at Sunbird Lilongwe.

Sulom general secretary Williams Banda told our sister paper Nation on Sunday, that the position will be filled by a Southern Region-based official and that clubs have since been asked to nominate  names of people they feel should take up the position.

The position of vice-president fell vacant following the resignation of Charles Twalibu.

“I can confirm that I am vying for the position of Sulom vice-presidency and I have the blessings of my team,” said Mkandawire.

The Nomads vice-chairperson said his decision is based on passion for the game.

“I want to add value in the way we administer the national football league and my emphasis will be  on representing teams from the South who have no representation in the Sulom executive, but in general, I am looking at harmonising all the affiliates,” said Mkandawire.

Mkandawire said apart from his team, he will also be courting other Southern Region-based teams for support.

“I have a good working relationship with most of the club officials having been in the mainstream football administration for over two years now,” said Mkandawire.

Wanderers chairperson George Chamangwana confirmed that Mkandawire has their full support.

According to Banda, Sulom executive committee will converge and scan the names and pick a candidate, then the AGM will ratify the proposed name.

“That is the trend in Sulom, we don’t hold elections when there are such vacancies. So, consultations with Southern Region teams on nominations are at an advanced stage,” said Banda.

However, the Sulom GS said he could not disclose the names of people that have been nominated so far.

“Some teams have already submitted their nominations, but we can’t release the names until the AGM,” he said.
