In the Northern Region, of the 18 legislators consulted 16 or 89 percent, indicated that they would not be supporting the Bill.

Some legislators went overboard describing any action legalising abortion with so many adjectives, including that the constituents would only support the Bill ‘over my dead body’.

Mzimba East legislator, Wezzie Gondwe, said personally, she supports the Bill, but she cannot vote for it because people in her area regard abortion as a sin and evil.

Jappie Mhango of Rumphi North and Chidumba Mkandawire of Rumphi Central said people in their areas were against the Bill, while Yona Mkandawire of Rumphi West said he needs to consult his constituents, but does not support the Bill personally.

Chitipa Wenya’s Davis Ng’ambi and his Chitipa South counterpart, Werani Chilenga, said the Bill was ‘devilish’ and would not be supported.

Chilenga said abortion was “devilish, barbaric, satanic and it can only happen over my dead body. The people of Chitipa South reject it.”

His neighbour, Chitipa Wenya legislator Davis Ng’ambi said people in his area do not want to be party to the Bill.

While Mzimba South East legislator Ackson Kalaile-Banda said would not support the Bill.
