North referees sit for exams

Northern Region Referees Association (NRRA) on Sunday organised examinations for non-graded and grade three referees at Katoto Primary School in Mzuzu.

Mzuzu-based Confederation of African Football (CAF) instructor Alex Mbale alongside the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) referees sub-committee chairperson for the North, Zuza Nyondo, and referees assessor Winston Chikoza facilitated the exams.

In an interview on Sunday, Mbale said most referees had stagnated on the same grade whereas others are yet to be graded; hence, the exams.

“It is about four years since we last graded some referees. We feel it is time we gave them the grades as an incentive,” said Mbale.

The referees were drawn from Nkhata Bay, Mzuzu and Karonga.

Mbale said some were not included in the programme due to logistical problems but assured that similar examinations will be taken to the other districts in the region.

The CAF instructor said the exams were crucial because they will help the association to fill gaps where some referees have retired.

One of the non-graded referees, Pearson Kamanga who sat for the exams, said he hopes to qualify for the grading.
