Nation Publications Limited (NPL) editor for Weekend Nation George Kasakula has been invited to be among a 13-member international jury to judge entries into this year’s China International Press Photo Contest (Chipp) in Beijing, China.

According to an invitation letter from the China Photojournalists Society and the organising team of 10th Chipp contest, Kasakula will be among the 13 judges drawn from across the world.

The jury includes publication editors and experienced photographers and their task will be to judge entries taken in 2013 by photographers and photojournalist from across the world in a competition whose overall winner will receive in excess of 10 000 euros.

In an interview yesterday, Kasakula said the invitation is an honour and a milestone in his career.

“I feel humbled. The other members are experts who have been in photography trade for about three decades and to be among them is nobility. It will give me an opportunity to interact and learn new ideas which will benefit my work in particular and the development of our media in general. This shows that Malawi journalism is making strides and we should be proud as a nation,” said Kasakula.

He is expected to leave Malawi tomorrow and will return home on April 17 2014.

Kasakula, who is the only African among judges, was identified through Leeds University in the United Kingdom where he graduated last year with a Master’s degree in International Journalism and Communication.

Some Malawian photojournalists have entered the contest. All prize winning photographs will be compiled into a year book and will be exhibited both in China and abroad.
