Registration officer Harrison Chidiso died in a car accident at Chizaula in Rumphi on Tuesday.

The National Registration Bureau (NRB) official died of severe head injuries at Mzuzu Central Hospital hours after a Toyota Land Cruiser, belonging to Mzuzu City Council and driven by Zakeyu Simwaka, overturned twice at a bend.

Kalaya: Matter still under investigation

According to Rumphi Police Station spokesperson Victor Khamisi, Chidiso, 24, from Wimbe in Kasungu, was part of a team withdrawn from Karonga where they were deployed for mass registration.

Two were admitted to Rumphi District Hospital while others escaped unhurt.

Meanwhile, police in Mzuzu have ordered 14 NRB temporary officials, who were arrested for unlawful assembly, to continue reporting to the nearest police station for bail following the end of mass registration in the city.

Last month, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Grace Chiumia ordered arrests of the registration officers at a meeting where they petitioned government to remit their outstanding pay.

They were granted bail after spending a night in a police cell, but they did not appear in court to take plea.

On Thursday, Northern Region Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said they will continue reporting to police every fortnight in the areas where they will settle.

Their lawyer Christon Ghambi faulted the police for not taking the suspects to court, saying failure to commence the case is violation of the suspects’ right to justice.

But Kalaya said the defence was at liberty to commence court proceedings. n
