Nsanje district commissioner (DC) Gift Rapozo has called for cooperation among authorities in the disaster prone district in the wake of a possible disaster.

The DC of the district based in the Southern Region of Malawi said this on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at appreciating the preparedness of organisations and government on disasters such as floods.

Rapozo told the gathering that unless good preparedness initiatives are put in place, it would be difficult for the district to respond to the disaster if it strikes.

“As a district, we need to prepare well so that we can respond quickly to any occurrences. We need to bang our heads and appreciate what each stakeholder has in stock in preparation for any disaster,” he said.

The DC has also warned people against expecting relief food from government each time they experience disasters.

He said it is high time people in the disaster prone district got serious with their lives by, among others, moving to places that are not at risk.

Rapozo’s statement comes amid concerns by some villagers in group village head (GVH) Nyamula’s area in Senior Chief Tengani who have been demanding support from government after their house roofs were blown off by a hailstorm some two weeks ago.

Care Malawi district disaster risk reduction coordinator Steve Jumbe said collaboration and planning in any disaster preparedness is crucial.

He appealed to the council to facilitate the review of the emergency plan so that organisations could prepare well. n
