Police in Ntcheu have arrested two men suspected of attacking motorists at Kachipeya along the Blantyre to Lilongwe M1 Road.

Police have identified the two 20-year-olds as Yona Wadson from Kaiya Village and Jones Machirika from Kachipeya Village in Traditonal Authority (T/A)Chakhumbira’s area in Ntcheu.

According to Ntcheu Police Station spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, the arrest of the two follows reports which police received last Friday night that some road users were attacked by people who blocked the M1 Road with stones.

“It was reported that one motor vehicle, on its way to Blantyre, hit one of the said stones and in the process one of its tyres burst thereby forcing the driver to stop the vehicle.

“Upon receiving the reports, we immediately followed them up and rescued victims who at the time had already been robbed of their property and were physically hurt,” said Chigalu.

He said the two will appear before court soon to answer charges of robbery contrary to Section 301 of the Penal Code.

Meanwhile, he said motorists travelling on the M1 Road should not worry about their safety as the police will see to it that there is sanity and all perpetrators of crime are brought to justice.

The arrests of the two is coming against a background of a conviction and sentencing of six individuals to eight years imprisonment each by the Ntcheu First Grade Magistrate’s Court after they were arrested on allegations that they had been blocking the M1 Road with big stones.

The six appeared before the court to answer a charge of intentionally endangering safety of persons travelling by road contrary to Section 237 (c) of the Penal Code. n
