Ntchisi community leaders drilled in budget tracking
Councillors, community and traditional leaders in Ntchisi have been trained in budget tracking at local level at Malomo Growth Centre.
Speaking during the training, Environment Water and Sanitation Foundation (EWSF) project manager Venancio Kachingwe said it is important to build the capacity of community leaders to track expenditure.
“We have observed that lack of community capacity to provide oversight over public resources is one of the major causes of fraud in government institutions.
“At community level, there are no accountability mechanisms to check public service delivery and revenue collection, which leads to financial abuse,” he said.
Chiefs’ Council representative Kelton Chazama appealed to participants to take advantage of such trainings so that they can hold duty-bearers accountable.
The training, which EWSF conducted with financial support from Tilitonse, attracted participants from Malawi Council for the Handicapped (Macoha), Federation of Disability Organisations in Malawi (Fedoma), police and National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust. n
