Ntchisi farmers advised to buy certified seed varieties

Farmers in Ntchisi have been advised to buy certified seed varieties if they are to produce bumper yields.

The appeal was made on Wednesday at Chikwatula Extension Planning Area (EPA) under Ntchisi Agriculture Development Office when Seed Company (Seed-Co) sensitised farmers on Seedco products.

Josia addresses the farmers

Speaking during the  meeting, Seed-Co extension officer Chimwemwe Josia said they targeted farmers in fear of buying fake seeds ahead of the farming season.

“It is important to buy certified seed varieties because it enables farmers achieve bumper yields and in case the seeds fail to germinate, the company gives the farmers some,” he said.

In his remarks, Chikwatula EPA extension worker Wilson Chikuyu said farmers make losses during farming season due to use of uncertified seeds.

One of the farmers, Laurent Mwale, thanked Seedco for the timely awareness meeting, saying it will help them differentiate fake from genuine seed varieties on the market.
