Flames number one, Simplex Nthala, is walking tall in the capital of Mozambique, Maputo, after being named 2012 Mocambola League goalkeeper of the season.

Nthala, who plays for Vilankulo FC on loan from Liga Maculmana, confirmed the development in an interview on Wednesday.

The former Wanderers goalkeeper played 20 of his team’s 26 league games where he conceded seven goals in five games and kept clean sheets in 15 games.

His closest contender conceded 12 goals in 18 games.

“I feel so good to win the award. I had a great season. I deserved this after a frustrating last season at Maculmana,” said Nthala in a text message from Maputo on Wednesday.

Nthala had a superb game in his team’s season closing fixture on Saturday as they drew 0-0 with champions Maxaquene.

Vilankulo have finished the season on position five with 40 points from 26 games following 10 wins, 10 draws and six losses.

In South Africa, Flames striker Robin Ngalande had a full second-half appearance for Wits University in their Tuesday Absa Premier League 0-0 draw against Ajax Cape Town.

This was Ngalande’s league debut and his second appearance for the team having previously only managed a four-minute appearance against Kaizer Chiefs in the Telkom Knockout Cup. He came in at half-time replacing Letsie Koapeng.

Striker Atusaye Nyondo is still struggling to get his first goal of the season in 11 games while Robert Ng’ambi continued struggling to regain his Platinum Stars starting 11 berth.

Defender Limbikani Mzava missed his first game for Celtic since his debut two months ago. He sat out of his team’s game against Amazulu with a minor knee injury. He limped off on Sunday in Celtic’s 3-2 win over Free State Stars in the Telkom Knockout Cup semi-finals.

Harry Nyirenda started for Black Leopards as they faced Orlando Pirates last night.
