Nthanda to participate in World Miss ‘Varsity contest

Miss Malawi first princess Nthanda Manduwi has earned a slot to represent Malawi at the World Miss University beauty pageant in Cambodia.

Manduwi, 22, is representing Malawi as an undergraduate of the University of Malawi, Chancellor College where she pursued a bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Economics and Demography.

In an interview, the Miss Chancellor College 2013 said she landed in Cambodia on Monday for the contest which will take place on December 20 2017.

Nthanda: I am really honoured

She said: “It is an absolute honour to represent Malawi at an international pageant. Malawi hasn’t been represented at such an event. So, I am really honoured to be here.”

The contest has brought together participants from 82 countries, with 10 of them from Africa. She is the only one from Malawi.

“This is a great opportunity and a door-opener for Malawi as a country. Surely, this is just the beginning for more girls to participate in such a contest,” she said.

Manduwi said the contest advocates for peace and girls’ empowerment in universities.

She said upon returning, she plans to organise the national Miss University as a way of giving more girls a voice in the country’s universities. She said the winner will work with her in advocating for peace and girls’ empowerment.

“I want to replicate the contest back home and get girls involved to understand that a beauty pageant is not only about beauty, but brains as well,” she said.

Manduwi is also expected to start hosting a television show on Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) in January.n
